21.11.12 - Rough Cuts and Extra Filming

After importing all of the clips to Final Cut Express, I was able to identify the areas of the music video which were missing. One of the sections which needs to be filmed is the lip syncing sections from the filming which I had already done the quantity of lip syncing I felt was not enough and from this I have arranged another day of filming on the 22nd November with only the artist. To create a successful lip sync in Final Cut Express I will need to film the whole of the song multiple times with a range of shots, angles and locations.

As the editing process continues I have been able to order all the of the clips in order of how they appear in the song so far, what I must be aware of is not having the shorter clips on the video 1 timeline on Final Cut Express as this timeline is for the lip synced clips. In today's lesson we were given a lip syncing tutorial and were able to use a country song called: "You Wanna What" to practise lip syncing the clips to the music.

6.11.12 - Reviewing the Filming Process

During the half term I had organised a total of 2 days filming - the 29th and 30th November, however due to the quantity of how much needed to be filmed we were unable to complete everything in those todays. Thankfully I was able to organise another evening of filming on Friday 2nd November, where we were able to film the bonfire scene as well as the lip syncing section of the song.

Since all the filming is done at this point, in class I am now beginning the editing process. I will be using the programme Final Cut Express. The editing will begin with rearranging everything in order on the timeline. From this filming shoot I have been able to collect around 30 minutes of material. When I have been able to sort out all of the clips I will decide whether another filming shoot needs to be arranged during the christmas holidays.

During the filming shoot I did not face many difficulties, there were 2 main problems. The first problem was that the surfaces which I was filming on were unstable for the dolly, so in the shot list which I had organised some of the areas which I had specified using a dolly had to be altered; although I was still able to use the dolly during the second verse - where the boyfriend misses a date and leaves the artist (Corrina Suri) waiting in the cold. Another problem was the weather because of the clocks changing it got a lot faster than I had assumed which was the reasoning behind having an extra day filming.

2.11.12 - Casting Ideas and Code of Dress

Casting Ideas:
For the female protagonist it was agreed that the artist Corrina Suri will be featured in the music video. I think was the best possible option for this music video because it is best to have the original singer as they know the song best - especially with the lip syncing and because Corrina Suri wrote this song it is easier for her to understand how she is feeling at each moment in the song, it is then assisted through the narrative based story line which I have developed.

As for the boyfriend we needed someone taller than Corrina Suri, who was able to film on the days which had been arranged, therefore Robert was the perfect choice:

Code of Dress:
To assist with the designing and deciding what each actor will wear I used a website called http://www.polyvore.com/ as it enabled the ability to create mind maps of the different codes of dress. For each actor I decided that a total of 4 costumes would suffice. The codes of dress below have inspired the codes of dress used in the music video. The female protagonists codes of dress will appear on the left and the male protagonists will appear on the right of each image.

2.11.12 - Risk Assessment:

Location:
Possible risks to health and safety of you and the equipment:
Avoidance strategies:
Visual Evidence:
Open Field
         Pot holes from rabbits

          Drain covers
Clearly mark out the area and avoid it whilst filming, increase awareness for actors

         Avoid this area whilst filming

Angelo’s Italian Eating Place
         Cutlery and table props

         General public
Relocate the props so that the realism of the scene is consistent but is out of the way for the actors

Filming will take place before opening hours – have spoken to the manager

Bedroom 1 and 2
         Falling off the bed

     Wire hazards
Make sure actors are in the centre of the bed to avoid falling

          Remove all wires whilst filming

Living room
         Enough room for filming

         Slamming of the door
Whilst filming we will move props and furniture out of the way of the camera

Alter the way in which the door is closed so that there is still the aggression but without the ‘slam’

Alley Way
        Drain covers

      Brambles
         Avoid this area whilst filming

Street (waiting for the date scene)
        Cars driving past/through the scene
Wait for cars to pass and make sure everything is clearly marked out e.g. glow in the dark accessories

2.11.12 - Recce Shots

In this music video I have a total of 7 different locations, each of the locations is significant through either the symbolism of certain colours or the verisimilitude of the overall music video. Here are the locations in order of appearance in the music video:

1. Pathway/ open green space:

On the right hand side of this image is the pathway which I want the titles to appear on, this path has a series of cracks running through it and this is important because it symbolises the cracks in the relationship between the couple as the cracks begin to appear and develop.

2. Open green space:

This is the setting for the first date which is the picnic date. The green is significant because of the colour as green symbolises jealousy (according to the Shakespearean play: Othello). The boyfriend is jealous of the freedom and isolation of this location, but green also symbolises growth and harmony, which represents the relationship.

3. Dinner date: Angelo's:

To show that time has past, in the first verse we cut to another date, which in this case is a dinner date. The restaurant is Italian which has the connotations of being romantic which is ironic considering the actions and attitude which the boyfriend shows

4. Waiting for the date: Street:

This is where the artist will wait for the date that will never come. It will be filmed to show time going by, once during the afternoon, the second time in the evening. We will use markers so that the shot frames are in exactly in the same place. This will also be one of the locations where the artist will lip sync to the music

5. Bedroom 1: Boyfriend ignoring calls:

The blue is a stereotype based on all boys rooms.
In this scene the boyfriend will ignore the calls from Corrina as she waits in the cold and dark for a date he has either forgotten or has decided just not to turn up to.

6. Alley way: Lip Syncing:

To emphasise the isolation that the artist is feeling this location will be filmed when it is darker, to symbolise her innocence in this situation but also to create sympathy for her from the audiences perspective.

7. Bedroom 2: Introducing 2nd equilibrium:

This will be the location of where Corrina wakes up once the boyfriend walks out on her in sheer anger. There will be a close up of Corrina's face so that the audience will not be able to see what is behind her, however the audience will not be able to completely see what is being revealed until the over the shoulder shot from Corrina's perspective. There will only be the props of the photos and petals rather than the different colour pillows and patchwork quilt as I think it will distract from the aim of the music video. The only other prop which will be in this location is the box and the coat - which help to create enigmas.

I will have one more location however it still needs to be confirmed for the argument scene.

26.10.12 - Filming Schedule

From the final storyboard I have been able to organise with the actors an the artist day where we will be able to film and what we will be filming.

Monday 29th October: We will be filming verses 1, bridge and the 3rd chorus. We will be meeting at 12 o'clock and will be filming to around 4pm. For Monday's filming I will need to organise the flower and props so that the muse-en-scene is consistent.

Tuesday 30th October: We will be filming in the evening to show the time passing in the music video. On Tuesday, the sections we will film are: verse 2 (if not already done on Monday), chorus 2, chorus 4. We will meet at 3 and film till around 5pm. With these sections of the song I will need to be aware of sunset which should be around 4:40pm.

2.11.12 - Shot List

2.11.12 - Final Storyboard

Final Storyboard: This is the final storyboard during the planning phase of the music video, however there are a few scenes which I am unhappy with but when I am filming I will fix.

Shot:
Location/ Audio/ Other:

Location: Pathway, near green open space
Audio: Introduction of song, diegetic of couple laughing/talking, fades into non-diegetic music of strumming of guitar from introduction of song
Other: Use of dolly to follow couple. As the couple aren’t in shot it creates the enigma of who are these people? What is their relationship to each other? Through the use of the focus on the ground through the high angle shot I will be able to introduce the titles for this music video such as: the production company, the artists name, title of the song
Location: Pathway, near green open space
Audio: Introduction of song, diegetic of couple laughing/talking, fades into non-diegetic music of strumming of guitar from introduction of song
Other: The titles may appear on a piece of card with the motif of the flower in the corner, however I may edit the titles to appear on top of the video using Final Cut Express, this I feel with give it a better finish to the overall music video – allowing it to seem like a professional music video
Location: Green Open space
Audio: Verse 1, lines: “As we sit there…feeling so close”
Other: This scene will appear as a date between the couple. I have chosen this setting to show jealousy through the colour green, but also to show the couples isolation/ they are the focus of each other’s worlds (I could possibly have people walking through the shot to emphasise the couple only having eyes for each other however I think it would take away from the romantic genre of the music video). It is at the very beginning that the flower motif is introduced. I decided to use a carnation because it is a symbolism of affection, love, passion but also is not the cliché flower of love (the rose)

Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: To show time has passed this is another date, another location, this introduces the breaking down of the relationship, the flower motif is the only constant throughout this music video
Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: The audience are introduced to the couple looking happy just being with each other, this quickly deteriorates
Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: Boyfriend pulls his hand away, this indicates the subtext that he is no longer interested in this relationship.

Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: Series of close ups, use of slow motion to emphasise the significance of the boyfriend pulling away his hand

Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: Possibly birds-eye view of the hand pulling away

Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: Extreme close up

Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: Extreme close up
Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: Reaction shot, through the use of a shot reverse shot. The first mid shot will be of the artist due to Goodwin’s theory: Demands of the record label will include lots of close ups, I have incorporated this theory into my music video and will be featured later on in the storyboard.
Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: The next shot (the reverse) will be of the boyfriend, trying to look elsewhere because he knows what he’s just done is wrong.
Location: Angelo Italian Eating Place
Audio: Verse 1/chorus 1, lines: “You turn to face me…I could have been the one”
Other: The next mid shot will be of the artist once more, to show her shock but also her disappointment in the guy she loved.

Location: Waiting by a street light
Audio: Verse 2, lines: “Blowing hot and cold…said to me a lie?
Other: To show time passing we will us markers so that the shots can fade into each other. So we will film in this location twice, I have researched the sun set time so that I can be sure to organise the filming schedule so that we can film when it’s light and then again when it’s slightly darker

Location: Waiting by a street light
Audio: Verse 2, lines: “Blowing hot and cold…said to me a lie?
Other: This will be when it’s darker, the artist will get out her phone and try calling the boyfriend. This will lead into a series of close ups and lip syncing

Location: Waiting by a street light/ Bedroom 1
Audio: Verse 2, lines: “Which might have…pain, pain”
Other: Parallel editing so that the two scenes appear on the screen at the same time. As the artist waits for her date, the boyfriend has either forgotten or just can’t be bothered this is an enigma for the audience to decide upon for themselves.
Location: Waiting by a street light
Audio: Chorus 2, lines: “I said no…love is like hell”
Other: Close up of artist to emphasise her emotions but also Goodwin’s theory as she is an up and coming artist.

Location: Walking down the street
Audio: Chorus 2, lines: “I said no…love is like hell”
Other: Series of shots slowly getting closer to the artist, starting with an extreme long shot

Location: Walking down the street
Audio: Chorus 2, lines: “I said no…love is like hell”
Other: Series of shots slowly getting closer to the artist, long shot
Location: Walking down the street
Audio: Chorus 2, lines: “I said no…love is like hell”
Other: Series of shots slowly getting closer to the artist, mid shot
Location: Walking down the street
Audio: Chorus 2, lines: “I said no…love is like hell”
Other: Series of shots slowly getting closer to the artist, ending with another close up, with her either closing her eyes or looking to the sky, to show she is remembering a previous date (picnic date) however it will differ from the original showing of it in the first verse

Location: Open green space
Audio: Chorus 2, lines: “A tragedy…I could have been the one”
Other: There will be a fade in and out to a memory of the picnic date however this time I will have an insert of the artist on another timeline so that appears as though there is one Corrina experiencing the moment, and another looking back on it in disgust because of what has changed since that moment

Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “And as you…into the ground”
Other: This is the climax of the song, where the couple are arguing. I will use a pan to follow the artist into the room. During the filming of this scene I will respect the 180° rule. The difficulty will be making sure that both of the people are in the shot, due to the layout of the setting as well as the height difference.
Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “I find myself weeping in silence”
Other: Although when the boyfriend was sitting down the artist held the higher status as soon as he stands up, the roles are reversed to how they were originally – her clinging to him, and him trying to pull away. I will use an over the shoulder shot so that the audience are sympathetic towards the artist. There will be a mid shot of the couple showing their argument.

Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “weeping in silence”
Other: An over the shoulder shot of the boyfriend walking out on her – multiple connotations such as: walking out on their relationship, had enough of her etc.
Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “Slowly sinking”
Other: Close up of the artist to show her emotions, create sympathy with the audience

Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “slowly sinking into the ground”
Other: Camera stays static as the artist falls out of shot, the artist will first fall to her knees then to the floor
Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “slowly sinking into the ground”
Other: Camera stays static as the artist falls out of shot, the artist will first fall to her knees then to the floor
Location: Living room
Audio: Bridge, lines: “slowly sinking into the ground”
Other: There will be a close up of the artist as she closes her eyes and there will then be a blackout to show how emotionally drained the artist is but also to show the beginning of the 2nd equilibrium coming

Location: N/A
Audio: Bridge, lines: “Where did I go wrong?”
Other: Black out
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3, lines: “I said no, bliss can’t end”
Other: Another close up of the artist, still respecting the 180° rule, whilst inspired by the ‘Life on Mars’ scene, the artist is in the same position but a different location.
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3, lines: “So suddenly”
Other: The artist has made up her mind; she is no longer going to be with the boyfriend. The camera will stay static once more to reveal the montage of photos and petals behind her although it will not be very clear causing an enigma until the slow pan.
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: long shot revealing the petals and photos spread across the bed
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: long shot revealing the petals and photos spread across the bed, the artist will take a box from off the dressing table, cliché way of getting over a boyfriend – to put everything into a box
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: long shot revealing the petals and photos spread across the bed, the artist will take a box from off the dressing table, cliché way of getting over a boyfriend – to put everything into a box. Possible POV shot from the artists perspective
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: long shot of the artist clearing away the petals and photos, reminiscent to begin with however with the build-up of more regular guitar strumming the clearing away will become more rushed
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: long shot of the artist clearing away the petals and photos, reminiscent to begin with however with the build-up of more regular guitar strumming the clearing away will become more rushed
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: long shot, once the petals and photos are cleared the last thing to go into the box is the flower, which will be snapped in half. To calm herself down the artist will push down slightly on to the top of the box
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: The artist will take the box and put her coat on, creating the enigma from the audiences – what is she going to do with the box? Where is she going?
Location: Bedroom 2
Audio: Chorus 3/4, lines: “Should have known…so suddenly”
Other: The artist will take the box and put her coat on, creating the enigma from the audiences – what is she going to do with the box? Where is she going?

Location: Bonfire, garden
Audio: Chorus 4, lines: “For all you know…will be the one”
Other: Tilt of the bonfire with the artist standing behind it

Location: Bonfire, garden
Audio: Chorus 4, lines: “For all you know…will be the one”
Other: Once the artist is in shot, there will be a mid shot of her dropping the box into the bonfire

Location: Bonfire, garden
Audio: Chorus 4, lines: “For all you know…will be the one”
Other: The artist will watch the box then will look straight into the camera

Location: Bonfire, garden
Audio: Chorus 4, lines: “For all you know…will be the one”
Other: Close up of the artist looking straight into the camera, fade to black
